Theatre of the Absurd

If these be our halcyon days,
What can we hope to find?
Will our future years be washed with tears?
- A fate that’s sealed and signed.
For now we can but sail the ship - steady as she goes.
Avoid the rocks, the hidden shocks, and the icy winds that blow
Steady as she goes…
But you know we sail without a destination,
And one by one we fade away.
And who says time will make it easier?
Don’t we all long for our yesterdays?
So the story goes…
Look how the world seems colder now – as we stumble to concede,
That the lies and creeds of hypocrisy will outlive the air we breathe.
If I could only find the will to take the mighty to the broken ones,
And say “if your deeds were fair, justify them there
To the daughters and the sons of the injustice you have done.”
But you know I sail without a destination,
And in the end I’ll fade away.
And who says time will make it easier?
Don’t we all long for our yesterdays?
So the story goes….
You know I don’t believe in all the things I read,
I just can’t trust the meaning.
This is all a theatre play but there’s no plot or lines to say,
And we’re just the actors for one season.
Hold on – there’s nothing left to say to you…
And so I join the ‘Passion Play’ and hide out in the masquerade,
Careful not to give myself away.
How wonderfully we play our parts upon this stage of hidden hearts,
With the final twist yet to be unveiled.
Hold on – There is nothing left to say to you…
I remember once, I walked behind
A black car in a funeral line, my face reflected in its glass.
And I noticed how I looked dignified, ennobled by the tears I cried,
So I turned my face towards the mass.
Hold on – There is nothing left to say to you…
Death on the skyline, bombs at the bus stop,
Tears in the terrace a thousand miles away.
Little lady Lilliput, gentle as a snowdrop,
She’ll blow your head off if you get in her way.
Jesus in a moneybag, crosses at the gift shop,
Salvation or redemption, pay for what you need.
Actors in the pulpits, preying on the sinners,
Stigmatic revelation, did you see the statue bleed?
In this theatre of the absurd -
Here’s the strangest truth that you’ve ever heard.
A gunman with a jury for the children of the ghetto,
“A bullet in the kneecap should help them understand!”
“Do as we say don’t do as we do!”
Say all the little Hitlers with their tin-pot plans.
In this theatre of the absurd -
Here’s the strangest truth that you’ve ever heard…

The Hunger (edit)
05:39
|
|

The bright lights of the city shine
Upon the new man of the hour.
He signs another dotted line;
He says his will gives him the power,
And as for luck?
He says he just doesn’t need it.
He strides into the living night,
A ship of fools all around him.
Another fix just to get their kicks,
He only needs to flash the cash,
And the river of plenty:
It just keeps flowing.
Oh for the child
Who sleeps by hunger’s gate.
There’s food on the table
But only tears upon her plate.
Only the howling wind
To sing her soul to sleep.
Walk a mile in the shoes of the child
And you’ll dry the tears she weeps.
Meanwhile in a black limousine
Our hero closes a new deal.
Kingmaker, mover and shaker,
He’s got no time for those in need,
He’s got his eyes on the prize
Man…the big money’s talking.
He steals into the dark of night:
A fixer of returnable favours
He says that everyone has a price
So he’s loaded the dice.
He only needs to flash the cash
And his army of friends,
It just keeps growing
Oh for the child…
He is here,
He don’t like those bleeding hearts.
His message clear:
It’s been live or die from the start.
And he’s heard them all:
Those tales for tea and sympathy
In the rise and fall, he says
Only the strong survive
The filthy rich, fit and strong
Yes he is here -
And he walks among us now,
He’s got a heart of stone you know,
A heart that’s a mark of the age
The bright lights of the city shine
Upon the big man of the hour.
He sold his soul for complete control
Now, he’s counting in the counting house;
His only friend is the money
Because he don’t trust anyone.
He strides into the living night,
A ship of fools all around him.
He’s the kingpin
That’s all that matters to him
He only needs to flash the cash,
And the river of plenty
It just keeps flowing

The Sleepers are Waking
04:36
|
|
||
In the time you took to fall, I saw the whole world waking,
From the houses of old tales across the rooftops chasing -
Where the sleepers are waking.
And so we walked old friend in memory,
Bathed in the light of the good days.
And all we once knew found new form:
Our youth, our strength, the good days…
And voices sing out - they say…
“The sleepers are waking, returned from the night -
In the new mist of morning.”
With light in their eyes and no earthly disguise,
And the sound of laughter from the old house,
And a welcome by the door.
In the time it takes to fall I saw the sleepers waking,
From the houses of old songs across the rooftops chasing -
Their voices sing out - they say…
“The sleepers are waking, returned from the night -
In the new mist of morning.”
With all that they need and no earthly disease
And a home fire burning in the old house,
And a final shelter from the storm.
All we once knew: the houses of home.
Giving away the days of sorrow,
Giving in to the living light of memory

The fool believed the the poet's words
Now he's waiting in the hall,
With hopes and dreams and far-fetched schemes
All wrapped in a christening shawl
But I could see right through the lies,
I knew there was no compromise at all.
The politician moves with ease,
And he waves one blood-stained hand,
To the gangland sons of smoking guns
As they issue their demands.
And I pour myself another drink,
Try not to look try not to think at all.
You know I tried to forget myself,
I even tried to lose control.
And although these eyes are more or less open wide
I sleep on...
The ruthless man with a business plan
Invites corruption round for tea.
But his handshake with the Mason King
Betrays him for his greed.
When I looked through his disguise,
I knew there was no compromise at all.
Today I gazed upon the truth I found,
It made my head spin round and round
And although my feet are more or less on solid ground,
I dream on...
Murder is what murder does and murder's what you've got,
If you've the will to make the kill
The give me your best shot.
Fire not blood run through these veins.
Why don't you walk with me?
Now every waking hour brings a ghost up from the deep,
They gather round to take you down
And put your dreams to sleep.
Like the hand of fate you feel the weight
Of the secret that you keep.
You killed and maimed with grimy hands
And crawled out of the slime.
Until you stood upon the castle walls,
The most feared of the line.
And how it all did bend
To your will my friend.
But your soul diminished in time.
And now we stand before you:
The children of the past,
With the secret that you choose to keep,
Under the shadow that you cast.
But you will find no ease,
Nor will you rest in peace,
Like the Dead Heroes of the past.

Watching & Waiting Man
05:35
|
|
||
I am a waiting man
In the killing fields of time.
With the dreaming seeds
Of all I am.
I am a watcher too,
Along a dangerous line of sight,
And I can’t quite believe
What’s before my eyes.
In the time between what’s done
And the days to come:
I watch and I wait.
All the walkways of my dreams:
I’m still waiting there,
Lost in time.
All the victories I planned out:
I watch them as they fade…
